finding your "self"

What is more important in self-portraiture – envisioning who you are (i.e. your “true self”) or envisioning who you wish to be (i.e. your “best self”)? Why?

I am a firm believer of finding and being yourself. I have read the book Siddhartha which is about a man trying to find his "self". I believe it's very important that you should envision who you are first before you even try to figure out who you would like or want to be. The reason that is, is because why would you want to be someone else or try to portray yourself as someone else when your not even sure if you know your "true self".
